SMOKE ABATEMENT.
The Sanitary Inspectors all hold the special certificate
of the Royal Sanitary Institute for smoke inspection.
Seven special inspections were made in connection
with nuisances arising out of the emission of smoke. In
three instances the complaints were confirmed, and these
were remedied by improved method of stoking or change
of fuel.
The increased use of electricity and gas for heating
and cooking for domestic purposes will do much to
prevent the pollution of the atmosphere. Bromley is not
a factory area, and, therefore, smoke pollution of the
atmosphere must necessarily be more from the domestic
use of fuel.
FACTORIES AND WORKSHOPS.
Table XIV. in the Appendix gives details of statistics
with regard to inspections of, and defects found, in
factories, workshops, workplaces and outwork premises.
SWIMMING BATHS AND POOLS.
The filtration and chlorination plant at the Corporation's
Swimming Bath at Southlands lioad continues to
work satisfactorily, and at the time of writing the
extensive alterations and improvements are nearing
completion.
Samples of water taken from the four private pools
have proved on the various occasions satisfactory.
VERMINOUS HOUSES.
In nine instances houses were specially inspected for
verminous conditions. In addition 33 houses were found
to have vermin present during the course of ordinary
inspections which were being made for housing defects.
It has been our practice for a number of years to
encourage occupiers to take remediable measures to
eradicate from their houses conditions which should not
exist.
