The following comparative table of figures over the past five years shows in broad outline the growth of the

centres:—

No. of welfare sessions291325362399401

The foregoing extracts of figures show to some extent
the progress in the work of the welfare centres, and
indicate clearly their increasing popularity.
It is here that I must refer with appreciation to the
excellent work undertaken by the voluntary workers at
the centres and clinics; coupled with the agreeable social
atmosphere which their presence brings to the work, there
is also the valuable assistance they give in the weighing
of babies, the recording of attendances and results of
weighings, and the booking of drug, etc., sales. In
connection with this work it is to be noted that no less
than 17,620 weighings were recorded during 1936—an
average of 44 per session. It is evident to all associated
with the work that these welfare centres are of first
importance in the prevention of disease—they play a
smaller part in treatment.
Milk in Necessitous Cases.
The number of applicants who were granted assisted
milk supply during 1936 was 74. The total quantity of
milk supplied during the year was 784 gallons (liquid)
and 231bs. (dried).
