remains to be done, either by the provision of extra
nourishment at school, or by education of the parent in
providing a qualitative and quantative diet for the growing
child sufficient not only for the normal growth of the child,
but also for the extra strain placed upon the individual in
the improvement of its physical condition.
Provision of Meals.
The Local Education Authority does not exercise any
powers under section 82/84 of the Education Act, 1921.
Bromley is strictly a residential area, and there does not
appear to be any necessity on medical grounds for this
provision. Where undernourishment exists the case ;s
reported to the Bromley Children's Care Committee for
assistance at home or for free milk at school. This works
well, and, as the Committee has made provision in the
larger schools for the heating of midday meals provided by
the parent, there does not appear to be any urgent
necessity to put into operation the above-mentioned
sections of the Act.
Open Air Schools.
No special open air school for defective children is
provided in Bromley. It is found to be more economical
to provide for free convalescent home treatment to the
child requiring this provision. However, there is an
increasing demand for special education for the child that
is debilitated, crippled, or otherwise physically defective,
and no doubt the future will see in Bromley some special
school to deal with this increasing number of children.
At the present time the demand is met by the use of
institutions and schools provided by the larger education
authorities.
Occupation Centre.
An Occupation Centre was opened in Bromley in 1933
under the management of a voluntary committee.
Mentally defective children are accepted at this Centre who
are incapable of receiving education in special schools.
Upwards of 28 children attend who are under the care of
Miss H. Wade, Supervisor.
