GENERAL PROVISION OF HEALTH SERVICES
Care of the Aged
Fortunately the residents of Wood Green continue to live, as a
rule, to a ripe old ageāand in most cases to an active and happy old
age. There are, however, a considerable number of elderly people
who are lonely and out of touch with the services which are provided
to help them and it is towards these people that our efforts are
especially directed. The Old People's Welfare Committee are
continually expanding their services and the centre at Woodside
House and at the Old Folk's Club, Station Road, are of inestimable
benefit. The Work Centre for the elderly at Shropshire Hall is
very fully used and I think it could be said to make life worth
living for many of the lonely people who attend.
The Elderly Persons Advice Clinic continues to be held
fortnightly at Woodside House and I hope it may be possible to
expand this service using more than one centre, in order to cut down
travelling as far as possible. These Advice Clinics are attended by
Dr. Douglas, together with Mrs. Barr, a member of the Nursing
Staff.
Laundry Service for Aged Incontinent Persons
This service was set up in Wood Green in 1963 to serve the
Boroughs of Wood Green and Southgate and the Urban District
of Friern Barnet. It is an excellent example of co-operation between
three local authorities, all of whom have this service closely at heart.
With the coming changes other arrangements have had to be
made, and as from the 1st March, laundry for Southgate and Friern
Barnet will be dealt with elsewhere and that for Wood Green at
Hornsey Disinfection Station.
I am grateful to the three Councils and to the officers, particularly
of the Engineer's Department in Wood Green who have made
this scheme work so smoothly and efficiently and also to Mrs.
Mitchell, the Area Home Help Organiser, for the extra work she has
willingly put into this service.
Chiropody Service
Chiropody sessions continue to be held at Stuart Villa and
domiciliary visits are made as necessary.
Hospitals
The general hospital services available to the people of Wood
Green continue in the main as in previous years.
