BIRTHS
The number of live-births registered during the year was 654,
corresponding to 12.5 per 1,000 of population. This is very slightly
higher than the rate for 1951, which was 12.4. There were 12
stillbirths, giving a still-birth rate of 18.02 per 1,000 births. In
1951, the still-birth rate was 18.3.
DEATHS
The number of deaths credited to Wood Green after the
necessary adjustments had been made for inward and outward
transfers was 602, giving a crude death rate of 11.5 per 1,000 of
population and a corrected death rate of 10.9. This is a decrease
of 113 from the total of the previous year, when the death rate was
13.6.
Of the total of 602 deaths, no fewer than 414 or 69% occurred
at ages over 65. One hundred and twenty-seven deaths occurred
at ages over 80, and 19 at ages over 90.
INQUESTS
Twenty inquests were held following the deaths of Wood
Green residents during 1952, two of these without post-mortem
examination. A further 131 post-mortem examinations were carried
out without an inquest, seventy-four of these in the Prince of Wales
Hospital which, by arrangement with the Wood Green Borough
Council, has provided mortuary services since the Wood Green
mortuary was closed in 1945.
MATERNAL MORTALITY
No deaths occurred during the year as a result of childbirth.
Only two maternal deaths have occurred in Wood Green over
the past five years, during which time 3,508 births took place. This
is very encouraging, and compares most favourably with the situation
which we remember so well before the war.
