With the outbreak of the war the majority of the staff of the
department found themselves actively engaged on A.R.P. work,
and for several weeks the normal routine work of the department was
very seriously reduced. As soon as possible, however, the normal
health services were resumed, and before the end of the year the
services were running as normally as was possible under the changed
conditions brought about by the war.
I wish to thank the members of the Public Health and Maternity
and Child Welfare Committee and the Council generally for their
support during the year, and also the members of my staff for their
loyal co-operation. The extra work thrown on them has, in many
cases, involved the sacrifice of a very large amount of their leisure
time, but the sacrifice has been willingly made and I am very grateful
for it.
Your obedient Servant,
MALCOLM MANSON,
Medical Officer of Health.
