Public Health Department,
Convent School,
Earlham Grove,
Wood Green, N.22,
December 30th, 1940.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
or the Borough of Wood Green.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to present to you my Annual Report as Medical Officer
of Health for the year 1939. In accordance with the instructions of the
Minister of Health, the Report has been much curtailed and does not
supply the usual detailed information of the work of the Health
Department. The usual statistical tables have, however, been
provided so that the annual records of the health conditions in
the Borough may as far as possible be continuous and complete.
Up to the outbreak of war the work of the Department had been
carried on as usual, although a very heavy burden had already
been placed on it, in the preparation and organisation of the medical
part of the Council's Air Raid Precautions Scheme.
The sudden death of Mr. Stanbury, the Senior Sanitary Inspector
early in the year laid an added burden on the department, as it was
several months before it was possible to fill the vacancy. Mr. Stanbury
had been in the Council's service for 32 years, during which time
he had always been an efficient and tactful officer and a very loyal
colleague, and by his death the Council lost a very good servant,
and the Health Department one of its most useful members.
