ANNUAL REPORT, 1939.

Wood Green, N.22.
July, \Wi 1940.
To the Chairman and Members of the
Wood Greien Education Committee,
Mr. Chairman, Ladieis and Gentlemen,
I beg to present to you my Annual Report as School Medical
Officer for the year 1939. The year has been an abnormal one and
in common with every other side of the Education Committee's work,
the School Medical Service was very gravely disturbed at the beginning
of September, when a large proportion of the school children
was evacuated to various reception areas in Essex, and the schoolsi
were completely closed for several weeks. For the first week or two
it was not possible to carry out any school medical work, but at the
earliest possible moment a commencement was: made with dental and
minor ailment clinics followed very shortly afterwards by the
resumption of eye and ear clinics, and by the end of the year, all
our medical services were in action with the exception of the Speech
Clinic. These services catered for the children remaining in Wood
Green, and at the same time an effort- was made to assist in the
arrangements made for the children in the reception areas. One of
our School Nurses was sent to Great Dunmow, in Essex, in the
middle of September to help to look after the Wood Green children
in the schools there, a,nd at the same time one of our Health Visitors
was sent to HaJstead where she combined with her duties as Health
Visitor those of School Nurse in respect of the Wood Green children
in the schools there. Both these officers remained in the reception
areas until the end of the year, by which time the number of evacuated
children had been much reduced.
