ordinary schools. One very severe case of epilepsy was unfit to
attend any school, and has recently been sent to a Colony for
Epileptics.
XIV.—NURSERY SCHOOLS.
There is no nursery school in Wood Green, but classes for
children under school age are held in two of the Infant Departments.
These, of course, do not take the place of a proper Nursery School,
but they do meet a definite need in providing a healthy environment
during the day for young children whose home circumstances
are not altogether satisfactory.
XV.—SECONDARY SCHOOLS.
By arrangement between the Middlesex County and Wood
Green Education Authorities, the routine and special medical
inspections of the pupils attending the two Secondary Schools in
Wood Green are carried out by Dr. Miller and myself. Defects
found at inspections are reported to the parents, who make their
own arrangements for treatment. In the case of dental defects and
defects of vision, treatment is provided at the School Clinic under
an arrangement made with the County Education Committee. The
dental work is done by Mr. MacBean, part-time Dental Officer,
and the eye work by Dr. Boden, the School Ophthalmic Surgeon.
Six hundred and twenty-nine secondary pupils were medically
inspected during the year.
XVI.—PARENTS' PAYMENTS.
A small charge is made to parents for treatment given to
children at the dental clinic and the ear clinic, but no charge is
made for attendance at the minor ailments clinic, although a box
is always available for voluntary contributions. Wherever possible,
the full cost of operations for tonsils and adenoids, of artificial
sunlight treatment and of spectacles provided at the eye clinic is
recovered from parents. When the circumstances of the parents
make it difficult or impossible for them to meet the full cost, the
case is reported to the Care Committee and the sum charged to the
parents reduced or remitted.
