PREVALENCE OF AND CONTROL OVER
INFECTIOUS DISEASE.
Table VI in the Appendix shows the details of the notifications
of infectious disease received during the year. The total number
of cases notified was 323, which is rather less than the total for the
previous year, 368. The fall in numbers was due to the very low
incidence of scarlet fever which was responsible for only 98 notifications
as compared with 201 in 1935, and 292 in 1934. On the
other hand the incidence of diphtheria was very much increased,
99 notifications as compared with 39 in the previous year. The
total number of cases removed to hospital or sanatorium was 297,
and the number of deaths due to infectious disease was 100, a very
marked increase on the number for the previous year which was
57. The increase was due to the very high mortality from
diphtheria, pneumonia and tuberculosis, all of which was much
higher than in 1935.

The following table shows the number of cases of infectious disease admitted to the Joint Isolation Hospital from the various wards in the town :—
