During the year application was made to the Minister of
Health for powers to act as the local supervising authority under
the Midwives Act, 1936. This would have empowered the Wood
Green Council to appoint whole-time midwives sufficient for the
needs of the district. Unfortunately the Minister refused his,
consent to the application, and the local supervising authority for
Wood Green is the Middlesex County Council. The County Council
has, however, asked whether the Wood Green Council will
agree to act as the County Council's agents for the district of
Wood Green, and the Wood Green Council has agreed to do so.
The Wood Green Council will, therefore, in the near 'future,
appoint a sufficient number of whole-time midwives to meet the
needs of the district, and the cost of their salaries will be met by
the County Council.
MATERNITY AND NURSING HOMES.
There was one Maternity Nursing Home in the Borough
during 1936 registered by the Middlesex County Council.
Supervision of the Nursing Homes and of the midwives
practising in the Borough is in the hands of the County Council.
HOSPITALS.
1. Fever.
Wood Green is one of four authorities (Hornsey, Finchlev,
Wood Green and Friern Barnet) which together own and control
the Joint Isolation Hospital, Coppetts Road, Muswell Hill.
The Hospital is a good one, with an excellent modern
observation block, built on the cubicle system, and has accommodation
for one hundred and fifty patients.
The cases admitted are for the most part those of scarlet fever
and diphtheria, but in case of need accommodation is also available
for most other infectious diseases, except smallpox, puerperal
fever and ophthalmia neonatorum, for which other provision has
been made.
