vented, had the advice given been taken, it may be of interest to
give a short account of it.
The patient attended the Ante-Natal Clinic early in her
pregnancy and was found to show definite signs of toxaemia for
which she was at once sent to Hospital. In hospital a serious view
was taken of her condition and the obstetric surgeon proposed to
terminate the pregnancy forthwith in the interests of the mother.
This offer the mother refused and she returned home, placing herself
under the care of her own doctor, who treated her as well
as it was possible to do by special diet and other measures. Premature
labour occurred in the eighth month and was followed immediately
by eclampsia. Patient was admitted at once to hospital,
and everything possible done for :her, but unfortunately death
occurred a few days later.
The popular Press has devoted considerable attention of recent
years to the subject of maternal mortality, and the necessity for
improving ante-natal and maternity hospital services. Here we
have a death occurring which was not prevented in spite of the fact
that both ante-natal advice and hospital provision was readily
available, but unfortunately not taken advantage of.
