The number of deaths due to the principal zymotic diseases :
enteric fever, smallpox, measles, scarlet fever, diphtheria, whooping
cough and diarrhoea (in children under 2 years) was 7. Diphtheria
was responsible for three deaths, whooping cough for two, and
measles and diarrhoea for one each. The Zymotic Death Rate
was 0.13 per 1,000 of population as compared with 0.01 for the
previous year.
INFANTILE MORTALITY.
The number of deaths occurring in children under 12 months
of age was 21, and the Infantile Mortality Rate 37 per 1,000 live
births. This is a considerable improvement on the previous year
when there were 32 infantile deaths and an Infantile Mortality Rate
of 53. The rate for the whole country in 1934 was 59, and for the
121 great towns 63.
The individual causes of the infantile deaths and the age at
which death took place are shown in Table V. It will be seen that
of the total infantile deaths one-half occurred during the first week,
and two-thirds during the first month of life.
MATERNAL MORTALITY.
Only one mother died during the year as a result of childbirth.
The death in this case was due to puerperal sepsis. The Maternal
Mortality Rate was 1.7 per 1,000 births. The rate for 1933 was
1.6.
