16.—SECONDARY SCHOOLS.
By arrangement between the Middlesex and Wood Green
Education Authorities, the routine and special medical inspections
of the pupils at the two Secondary Schools in Wood Green, have
been carried out as in former years by Dr. Brooke and myself.
Defects found at medical inspection are reported to the parents who
make their own arrangements for treatment. The arrangement
arrived at with the Middlesex Education Committee in 1931 whereby
treatment for visual and dental defects in secondary school pupils
was to be provided at the School Clinic, was still in abeyance during
1933, but I am glad to say there is every prospect of it being brought
into force during 1934.
17.—PARENTS' PAYMENTS.
A small charge is made to parents for treatment given to children
at the dental clinic and the ear clinic, but no charge is made for
attendance at the minor ailments clinic, although a box is always
available for voluntary contributions. Wherever possible the full
cost of operation for tonsils and adenoids, of artificial sunlight
treatment, and of spectacles provided at the eye clinic is recovered
from parents. Whenever the circumstances of the parents are such
as to make it difficult or impossible for them to meet the full cost
of treatment given to their children, these circumstances are
considered by the Care and After Care Committee, and the cost
charged to the parents reduced or remitted as the case may be.
18.—HEALTH EDUCATION.
In July 1932 the question of the teaching of hygiene in the schools
was discussed at a meeting of the Joint Advisory Committee representing
the Education Committee and the teaching staff, and a
recommendation was made to the Education Committee, which was
subsequently adopted, to the effect that the teaching of hygiene
should be included in the curriculum and time-tables of all classes
in Junior and Senior Schools, and that the work should be based
on the Board of Education's Handbook of Suggestions on Health
Education.
