16,033 mothers, infants and school children were inspected. 11,572, or 72 percent., were defective. 6,822,
or nearly 59 per cent. of those defective, were treated at the Centres.
9,127 teeth were extracted, 10,274 fillings done and 5,087 incidental operations, producing a total of 24,488
treatments for the year.
20,547 attendances were registered by these patients.
SCHOOL DENTAL SERVICE.
Inspections.
Routine.-11,751 children out of a total of approximately 19,800 were inspected at the schools during 181
visits, an average of 65 per session.
It was not found possible to complete the round of schools and some 8,000 children missed the annual routine
inspection.
8,234 children, or 70 per cent., were found defective and referred for treatment.
A record of all defects found was charted and "Care of the Teeth" pamphlets issued to scholars.
Specials.-2,177 children were inspected at the Centres. Included in this figure are the cases of minor
defect which has developed between the routine inspections together with leavers seeking a final examination. Every
effort was made for these children to complete treatment and leave school with a healthy and sound dentition.
Treatment.
Out of a total of 9,662 routine and special cases referred as defective, 5,419, or 56 per cent., were treated at
the Centres.
7,053 teeth were extracted, of which 959 were permanent, and of these permanent extractions 191 were
removed for the purpose of relieving overcrowding and 768 on account of extensive caries.
6,267 fillings were done on permanent teeth and 1,818 on temporary teeth, making a total of 8,085.
The ratio of fillings done on permanent teeth to diseased permanent teeth extracted was 8 to 1.
3,066 sundry treatments performed include 8 acrylic crowns, root fillings to anterior teeth, minor gum treatments,
dressings of zinc oxides and sedatives, together with silver nitrate applications. 14,292 attendances were
registered during 1,229 treatment sessions to perform this work.
The total sessions allocated to the School Dental Service amounted to 1,410, and the average work done per
session is as follows :

Orthodontics.
All children requiring regulation appliances continue to be referred to Dental Hospitals and other Institutions.
The facilities offered at these institutions improved during the year so that most of the Willesden children needing
such treatment have been able to secure it.
Incidence of Caries.
The number of children found in routine inspection with carious teeth was 70 per cent., compared with 76
per cent, in 1938, that is, before the commencement of the present period of austerity.
