(3) The way in which the milk was consumed was investigated. It was found that in 78 cases :—
46 cases used milk in tea or pudding only.
11 cases used condensed or dried milk only.
10 cases had drinks of warm or boiled milk daily.
10 cases had drinks of unboiled milk daily.
1 case was breast fed.
(This does not include the 5 cases occurring in Park Royal Hospital.)
Hence from the above it would seem impossible to trace the source of the infection to the
Milk Supply.
Locality and Street.
An attempt to trace the infection to a particular street was also made.
The addresses of all the cases were scrutinised to find out if there was an outstanding number
of cases in any one street. The figures given below show that they were fairly equally distributed
throughout the neighbourhood:—
28 cases being in Brett Road.
19 ,, ,, Milton Avenue.
13 „ „ Shakespeare Avenue.
13 ,, ,, Melville Road.
13 „ ,, Carlyle Avenue.
8 „ „ Barry Road.
While there were fewer cases in other streets.
Family.
An investigation of the cases from the point of view of the spread of infection through the
family was next made. Multiple cases in one family were found to be common.
The greatest number of cases occurring in any one family was 4.
57 Multiple cases occurred in families as follows :—
4 cases in 3 families.
3 „ „ 5 „
2 „ „ 15 „
A comparison was then made of the date of onset of the symptoms and the date of removal
to hospital of the cases occurring in the same family. This showed that family infection played a
part in the spread of the epiemic, e.g.:-

(1) 4 cases occurred in the family S., Milton Avenue.

Similarly in the case of 2 cases occurring in the same family in the majority of instances the
second case could be traced to the preceding case occurring in the family in question.
