that the prevalence of infectious diseases was practically nil,
and that when the children returned to the ordinary elementary
school their attendance was much more regular, and
quite up to the normal standard.
In view of the character of the ailments of children for
whom such a school caters, it is essential that they should
be taught how to "live," and that the school should
endeavour to secure that the children form healthy habits,
and so do much to combat the evils which arise in many
instances from the unhygienic circumstances in which they
are reared.
How far this is being done may to some extent be
guaged by the typical daily routine which the children
undergo. At Shooter's Hill Open Air School (L.C.C.) this
is as follows :—
9 a.m. Breakfast—Bread and milk, raw apples.
9.35. Assembly for Prayers, Scripture or Hymns.
9.55. Class talks.
10.5. Arithmetic.
10.40. Recreation.
10.55. Nature Study.
11.25. Breathing Exercises.
11.30. Drawing.
12 noon. Prepare beds for afternoon rest. Personal
Hygiene.
12.45 p.m. Dinner—Roast beef, cabbage and potatoes.
