All refuse with a marketable value is extracted and the
remainder burnt in a nine-cell incinerator. The Plant continues
to be an attraction to representatives of other local authorities
in this country and it has been inspected by several distinguished
visitors from overseas.
Other services controlled by the Public Cleansing
Department are street cleansing, gritting, snow removal, gully
cleansing and the supervision of public conveniences.
Up to 30th September, 1937, the cleansing of gullies was
carried out by contractors. From this date the work has been
done by direct labour and a new petrol driven gully emptier
was purchased for this purpose.
