POPULATION.
In this Report the rates are based on an estimated civil
population of 49,776.
The estimated population for each of the Sub-districts is as
follows :—
The Northern Division of the Borough (lying North of the
middle line of Church Street) has a population of about 16,755 ;
and in the Southern Division the population is approximately
33,021.
The natural increase of population by excess of births over
deaths during the year amounted to only 71, as against 377 in the
preceding year.
BIRTHS.
During the year 1917 there were only 771 births, viz. :—410 males and 361 females. The birth-rate per 1,000 per annum was therefore 15.5, as against 20.1 for the preceding year.

The illegitimate births numbered 26 ; 11 males and 15 females.
During the year the births notified under the Notification of
Births Act have been compared with the births registered by the
Registrar of Births, and the respective figures are 620 and 771.
