Water Supply.
The water supply of the district, which is almost entirely
supplied by the Metropolitan Water Board, remains satisfactory in
quality and quantity. The supply is from high pressure mains.
All the houses in the district are provided with direct pipe
supply, the few wells which previously existed having now been
discontinued. It was not considered necessary to carry out any
bacteriological or chemical examination of drinking water during
the year. There is no evidence of any plumbo-solvent action in
the water.
Refuse Collection and Disposal.
The Borough Engineer and Surveyor reports that a weekly
collection service was maintained throughout the year. Quantity
of refuse dealt with at the Refuse Disposal works amounted to
19,303 tons, an increase of 321 tons on last year.
Following conversion of the Refuse Disposal Works at Barrowell
Green, disposal in bulk by road following the extraction of
salvage was commenced on 1st January, 1959. The new system
has worked extremely well with a considerable improvement in conditions
both in the works themselves and in the immediate
neighbourhood due to the elimination of smoke from the furnaces.
A further stage in the provision of dust extraction plant was commenced
in 1959 with the erection of hoods over the tipping hopper,
the elevating conveyor and the tin baling plant. This work is
virtually complete at the time of writing and when the new plant
is in operation, the entire works will be as dust-free as it is possible
to be.

Sale of salvage recovered from the refuse during the year realized an income of £12,775. The following table gives the tonnages of the materials sold:
