In accordance with a request by the Ministry of Housing and
Local Government in Circular 32/57 that local authorities should
give information to the general public concerning the provisions of
the Act, the Public Health Department dealt with 113 enquiries
relating to certificates of disrepair.
Housing Applications.
Visits by the Public Health Inspectors to applicants for housing
accommodation and the preparation of reports as to living conditions
were continued in 1957. The number of visits for this purpose was
36, as against 44 in 1956.
The close liaison between the Public Health Department and
the Housing Department has been maintained in 1957, as in previous
years. On many occasions, I have been asked by the Town
Clerk to advise as to the degree of urgency on medical grounds
applicable to particular applications.
Food Hygiene.
During the whole of 1957, the campaign towards improvement
in the standards of food hygiene and the implementation of the
Food Hygiene Regulations, 1955, which featured prominently in
the work of the Public Health Inspectors in 1956, was actively
continued. Largely due to the concentrated efforts of traders and
Inspectors alike in 1956, a great deal of the work carried out in this
field during 1957 was in the nature of a "mopping up" operation,
i.e., dealing with the relatively small hard core of traders who were
resistant to the implementation of the Regulations. In all, the
Inspectors made 1,156 visits in connection with food hygiene during
1957, and 63 notices were served to secure compliance with the
Regulations.
As a result, the following improvements were achieved :
Regulation 9. (Personal Cleanliness).
Warnings re smoking while handling food were given in
two separate instances.
