POPULATION
The Registrar General estimated the civilian population of the
Borough at the middle of 1949 to be 74,350, an increase of 320 as
compared with 1948.
BIRTHS—BIRTH RATE
The nett total births accredited to the district was 944, a
decrease of 70 on the preceding year. Of these, 468 were males
and 476 females (9 males and 9 females being illegitimate).
The birth-rate for the year was 12.69 per 1,000 of the population.
The birth-rate for England-Wales for 1949 was 16.7 and for
the administrative County of London, 18.5.

During 1949, the number of births recorded was 123 more than
the number of deaths, as compared with 244 in 1948.
The total number of births actually registered in the district
during the year amounted to 651, of which none was unnotified.
The percentage of births notified was therefore 100 as compared
with 99.15 in 1948.
