Inspection and Supervision of Food.
Milk Supply.—No registration of retailers or producers has
had to be refused under the provisions of the Milk and Daries
(Amendment) Act, 1922 (Milk and Dairies Order, 1926).
Six additional retailers were registered during the year under
this Act.
Under the Milk (Special Designations) Order, 1936, 18 Dealers'
Licences to sell Pasteurised Milk, 8 to sell Tuberculin Ttested
Milk and 1 to sell Accredited Milk were granted during the year.
One Pasteuriser's licence in respect of a pasteurising and
bottling establishment was granted.
Ten supplementary licences for Pasturised Milk, 7 for Tuberculin
Tested Milk, and 2 for Accredited Milk were granted during
the year.
No milk, other than that contained in sealed bottles, is retailed
from any general shop in the district.
The standard of milk sold in the Borough continues satisfactory,
with certain, comparatively minor exceptions. It is
most unfortunate that the Government has not. yet. seen fit to
introduce legislation making the pasteurisation of all milk supplied
within any district compulsory. Until that is done, or until the
question of eradicating tuberculosis from the heards of this country
is tackled, anything approaching perfection will be impossible. As
the eradication of tuberculosis would entail enormous expenditure
spread over a period of many years, pasteurisation would appear
to hold out the only immediate solution to the present, problem.
Milk, one of our ideal foodstuffs from the nutritional point of view,
is still rightly under suspicion. To remove that suspicion, the
public must 'be assured of a safe supply. Pasteurisation, carried
out efficiently and under strict supervision, will achieve this object.
Without pasteurisation, our hands still remain firmly and most
unpleasantly tied.
Infringements.—The following infringements were discovered
and rectified during the year:—
Milk and Dairies Order, 1926.
