Cross-Infection.—The following cases of cross-infection
occurred during the year:—
Scarlet Fever in Diphtheria Ward 1
Positive Nasal Diphtheria Swab in Scarlet
Fever Ward 2
Total 3
When one considers the large number of cases admitted to the
hospital under a mistaken diagnosis, and the fact that several
children were admitted to both the scarlet fever and diphtheria
wards incubating a second disease which developed during their
stay in hospital, I think these figures might be taken as extremely
satisfactory.
The number of positive diphtheria swabs discovered in the
scarlet fever ward fell very considerably during the past year, a
fact which can be attributed, at least in part, to the earlier discharge
of the patients. Altogether, 1935 probably showed the
lowest incidence of cross-infection which the hospital can produce.
Fortunately, no cases of measles were imported into any of the
wards, one of the greatest problems of Isolation Hospital administration
being thus eliminated for one year.
Transfers to and from other Hospitals.—The following
