The permanent nursing staff was not altered during the past
year, but it was necessary on quite a number of occasions to obtain
the services of private nurses to cope with extra demands as they
arose. The out-door staff also remained unaltered.
Some idea of the major additions and improvements undertaken
at the Isolation Hospital during the past five years may be
gauged from the following details of the work carried out during
that period :—
Central heating installed throughout the hospital, with
the construction of an adequate boiler house and apparatus;
construction and furnishing of seven additional nurses' bedrooms
and fire escape in Administrative Block; installation
of ultra-violet and infra-red apparatus; purchase of new
ambulance; equipment of wards with modern furniture;
purchase of new surgical equipment, including operating table
and blood transfusion apparatus; construction of new
incinerator and porter's work-shop; construction of residence
for Medical Superintendent; construction and equipment of
laboratory; installation of new internal telephone system ;
laying down of new "nurses' tennis courts.
Apart from these alterations, the following additions to the
hospital staff have taken place since 1930 :—
Surgical consultant, Night Sister, 2 Ward Sisters, Nurse
for special duties, 1 Staff Nurse, 5 Probationers, Assistant
Gardener, Assistant Porter.
The Hospital is now fully equipped and adequately staffed to
meet all reasonable requirements, although, of course, it is realised
that the present accommodation is entirely insufficient for the
needs of both Tottenham and Southgate.
I should not like to let this opportunity pass without expressing
my deep appreciation to Mr. Phillips, the Borough Surveyor, for
the consistent and invaluable services which he has rendered to the
hospital during the past five years of my tenure of office as Medical
Superintendent. Without his enthusiasm and co-operation, the
results achieved would have been obviously impossible, and I personally
owe him a debt of gratitude which I now wish to place on record.
