HOUSING OF THE WORKING CLASSES ACT, 1890.
During the year 6 cottages were closed—2 in Tottenliall
Road, and 4 on Bourne Hill. These have all been demolished.
The ground adjacent to and on which the two cottages in
Tottenliall Road stood has been purchased by the District
Council, and 34 workmen's cottages are to be erected theieon
during the coming year.
Public and Private Urinals.—The Council has not
provided public conveniences in the District. An inspection was
made in 1906 of the whole of the sanitary conveniences attached
to the various publichouses, with the result that many urinals
have been rebuilt and put in a better sanitary condition. The
Council also improved the lighting of a number of such urinals
which are available for public use.
This work was, however, done more as a temporary measure
pending the time when public sanitary conveniences would be
provided.
The need of these in various parts of the District is being
felt more and more each year.
The Surveyor and Sanitary Inspector have reported on
several positions in which public sanitary conveniences might
advantageously be provided, and have also suggested the provision
of those for both sexes in Broomfield Park, with access thereto
from adjoining public highways.
The question is still under the consideration of both the
Health and Park Committees.
Dairies, Cowsheds, and Milkshops.—These have been
inspected by the Sanitary Department.
Veterinary Examination of Milch Cows.—The Council
have suggested that the County Council should endeavour to
obtain concerted action in this matter by all local authorities in
the county, and, failing this, that the work should be undertaken
by the County Council, but nothing so far has been definitely
arranged.
Bakehouses.—These have been inspected.
SLAUGHTER HOUSES.
There are eight slaughter-houses in the district.
Several of these slaughter houses, as mentioned in my last
Annual Report, are in unsuitable positions owing to their close
proximity to dwelling-houses.
Some of them are little used, and the others have been
systematically inspected, particularly at slaughtering times.
No carcases were found to be tuberculous.
PUBLIC HEALTH ACTS AMENDMENT ACT, 1907.
This Act will shortly be in force in the District.
