(vi) Pet Animals Act, 1951.
Fifteen persons are licensed to keep Pet Shops. Frequent inspections
are carried out.
3.—INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD
(i) Milk Supply.
At the end of the year 44 persons were registered as Retailers or
Distributors. Of these 15 were licensed to retail Tuberculin Tested
Milk, 22 were licensed to retail Pasteurised Milk, and 44 were licensed
to retail Sterilised Milk.
The two Pasteurising plants are kept under surveillance by the
department.
During the year, 101 samples of milk wefe taken, and all passed
the prescribed tests.
(ii) Ice Cream.
There were at the end of the year four manufacturers, and 208
vendors on the register.
During the year, 45 samples were taken for Bacteriological examination,
and of these 41 were satisfactory, and four unsatisfactory.
Fourteen samples of ice-lollies were taken, and only one proved
unsatisfactory.
Twelve samples of ice-cream, and eleven ice-lollies were taken for
Chemical examination, and only two of the samples of ice-cream, and
one ice-lolly proved unsatisfactory.
(iii) Meat.
There are three licensed slaughterhouses in the Borough, two of
these being licensed for the slaughter of horses, as well as livestock.
One slaughterhouse is operated by a firm of Wholesale Butchers, who
supply meat to retail butchers in the Borough and adjoining, Districts,
and provide meat for the London Markets.
Slaughtering takes place on seven days of the week, and the Public
Health Inspectors attend the slaughterhouses regularly, including
Saturday afternoons and Sundays, to ensure that 100% inspection of
all meat produced in the Borough is maintained. During the year under
review, 1,045, such visits were made. During this period a total of
27,128 animals were slaughtered, and a total of 19 tons, 12 cwts. 80 lbs
of meat was found to be unfit for human consumption, this wasi disposed
of for animal feeding through the recognised channels.
Table 12 sets out the particulars of the animals slaughtered and
inspected, and the details of condemnation.
There are also three Wholesale Meat Depots, and 64 butchers shops
in the Borough, and, during the year, 153 inspections were made of
these premises.
