(vi) Infestation.
The facilities for disinfestation, and the destruction, when necessary,
of clothing and bedding remain as before.
(vii) Pet Animals Act, 1951.
Fourteen persons are licensed to keep Pet Shops. Frequent inspections
continue to be carried out.
3.—INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD
(i) Milk Supply.
At the end of the year, 45 persons were registered as Retailers or
Distributors. Of these 13 were licensed to retail Tuberculin-Tested Milk,
18 were licensed to retail Pasteurised Milk, and 40 were licensed to retail
Sterilised Milk.
Two of the Retailers have their own Pasteurising plants, which are
kept under the supervision of the department.
During the year, 152 samples of milk were taken, and only 2 failed
to pass the prescribed test.
(ii) Ice Cream.
All Traders and Manufacturers have to be registered. There were
at the end of the year 4 manufacturers, and 199 vendors on the register.
During the year, 79 samples were taken for Bacteriological examination.
Only 2 proved unsatisfactory. Twenty-five samples of ice-lollies
were taken, and only 1 proved unsatisfactory.
(iii) Meat.
At the end of July the Ministry of Food de-requisitioned the Regional
Slaughterhouse in Oldchurch Road. There are now 3 licensed slaughterhouses
in the Borough, and one of them is also licensed for the slaughter
of horses.
Altogether, 26,923 animals were slaughtered for human consumption.
In addition, 157 horses were slaughtered for human consumption.
The Sanitary Inspectors have again paid the usual visits to Slaughterhouses,
Meat Depots, Butchers' Shops, Stalls, etc.
Table 12 sets out the particulars of the carcases inspected, and condemned.
