The deep formation in the whole district is London clay.
The hills to the north are of clay with patches of gravel.
In the middle and southern parts of the district the London
clay is covered by river gravel. Along the river Thames is
a broad belt of alluvial deposit just outside which the villages of
Rainham and Wennington lie on the gravel.
