All the above samples were genuine with the exception of the following:—

Apricot Jam Soluble solids 65.7%. Fruit A further sample was re-
approximately 32% (standard ported as genuine.
40%).
The following contraventions of the Food and Drugs Act were dealt with
by your inspectors: —
(1) Dirty milk bottle—Fined £3 and ordered to pay £5 5s. 0d. costs.
(2) Piece of string in wrapped loaf—Council decided to take no action
following report of investigations carried out at bakery.
(3) Bottle of lemonade contaminated by disinfectant—manufacturer warned.
RENT ACT, 1957
The following is a summary of applications received under the provisions
of the Act and subsequent action arising therefrom:—
Certificates of Disrepair applications under the 1957 Act 5
Notices of proposal to issue certificates served 5
Number of Certificates of Disrepair issued 1
Number of copies of Undertakings to carry out repairs received 4
Number of Certificates cancelled 2
It will be noted that the repair machinery of the Act continues to be used
but little.
FACTORIES ACTS, 1937 and 1938
Visits paid to factories totalled 207, and in addition to verbal intimations
regarding small defects, one written notice was served and complied with. These
dealt mainly with insufficient and defective sanitary conveniences and want of
cleanliness.
Notices were received in respect of 16 Penge residents who were employed
in certain trades in their own homes, but working for occupiers of factories in
other districts. In no case was it found that work was being done in unwholesome
premises.
CLEAN AIR ACT, 1956
Proposed Smoke Control Area No. 1
During the year the survey of Area No. 1 comprising 691 dwellings was
completed, and thus it was possible for application to be made to the Minister
of Housing and Local Government for his confirmation for the making of the
area a Smoke Control Area.
