NATIONAL ASSISTANCE ACT, 1948
Under Section 50 of the Act, it is the duty of the local authority to arrange
for the burial or cremation of the body of any person who had died in its area
if it appears that no suitable arrangements for the disposal of the body have or
are being made. During the year six bodies were dealt with by the Council
under these provisions.
Under Section 47 of this Act it was necessary to apply for Magistrates'
Orders for the removal of three women in need of care to a hospital. These
applications were granted.
MORTUARY
During the year 17 bodies were brought to the Mortuary where post-mortem
examinations were conducted by a Home Office pathologist.
NOISE ABATEMENT ACT, 1960
This Act, which came into operation during the year, provides under
Section 1, that noise or vibration which would amount to a nuisance at common
law becomes a statutory nuisance which can be dealt with according to the
procedure provided in Part III of the Public Health Act, 1936.
This legislation, which was overdue, should contribute to the health of the
community in this mechanical age.
My thanks are due to the Chairman and Members of the Public Health
Committee for the kindness and consideration they have always shown me during
the year.
I am, Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,

Medical Officer of Health.
