INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD.
Complaints were received regarding dirty milk bottles, slimy deposits in two
bottles of lemonade, and the presence in a bun of part of a beetle. Explanations
were obtained from the Firms concerned and in each case, the Public Health
Committee directed that a warning letter be sent.
The practice of some people in returning milk bottles to dairymen in an
unwashed and sometimes very foul condition cannot be too strongly condemned.
There are no manufacturers of ice-cream in the district. Eight samples were
submitted for bacteriological examination and the following is the grading of
the samples :—Grade 1—2; Grade 2—2; Grade 3—3; and Grade 4—1;
Pathogenic organisms were not found in any of the samples.
Periodical visits were made to premises and stalls where foods are prepared,
stored or exposed for sale. Defects found at 29 food premises were remedied.
The amount of food surrendered and condemned as unfit for human food
after examination by your Inspectors was 10 tons, 5 cwts., 2 qtrs., 3 lbs., a large
proportion of which was at a Food Manufacturing Factory.
