The district is mainly residential, there being no staple
industry. A large proportion of the residents are engaged in
business in London, and a number are retired business and
professional people.
The Census returns of 1921 give the number of inhabitants
working outside the District as 6,398, of which
4,986 were working in the County of London. 1,738 persons
enumerated in other districts were found to be working in
Penge.
