Paratyphoid Fever.
In 1925, an outbreak of Paratyphoid Fever occurred.
The details are as follow:
The outbreak of Paratyphoid Fever, numbering in all
12 cases, of which five were notified from one house and two
from another, commenced on the 22nd August, 1925.
On the 9th September, 1925, the Medical Officer of
Health of the County Borough of Croydon, Dr. H. P.
Newsholme, in investigating a case of Paratyphoid B,
occurring at a baker's and confectioner's shop in his district
found that several of the assistants had had acute symptoms
suggesting enteric infection, and that one assistant resided
in Penge.
There was a suspicion that the cause of infection in
the persons taken ill, one definitely with Paratyphoid
B and the others with suspicious symptoms, was associated
with one or other of two batches of veal and ham pies
delivered at the Upper Norwood branch of the bakery
concerned, on Tuesday, the 25th August, and Thursday,
the 27th August.
At this stage, four cases had actually been notified to
me, and several other patients had very suspicious symptoms.
A day or so later, viz.: the 10th September, seven further
cases were notified, and the last case was notified on the 15th
September.
