VITAL STATISTICS.
BIRTHS.
During1 the year 898 Births were registered as belonging
to the District, of which number 463 were males and 435 were
females. This is equal to an Annual Birth Kate of 19.3 per
thousand of population, as compared with 18.0 last year.
The Birth Rate for England and Wales was 15.1 in 1938
and 14.9 in 1937.
The number of Births registered as being illegitimate was
33, of which 21 were males and 12 were females.
There were also 25 stillbirths; 15 males and 10 females.
DEATHS.
The number of Deaths registered during the year as
belonging to the District was 388 (216 males and 172 females).
This number includes those deaths which, although
occurring outside belonged to this District, but excludes deaths
occurring inside the District, but belonging to other Districts.
The Death Rate for the year was equal to 8.3 per thousand
of population, as against 8.6 last year,
The Death Rate in England and Wales was 11.6 in 1938
and 12.4 in 1937.
The diseases claiming the largest number of deaths were:
Heart disease, 118; Cancer, 57; Circulation diseases 23 and
Pulmonary Tuberculosis, 21.
