VITAL STATISTICS.
BIRTHS.
During the year 786 Births were registered as belonging
to the District, of which number 385 were males and 401 were
females. This is equal to an Annual Birth Rate of 18.0 per
thousand of population, as compared with 19.1 last year.
The Birth Rate for England and Wales was 14.9 in 1937
and 14.8 in 1936.
The number of Births registered as being illegitimate was
31, of which 20 were males and 11 were females.
There were also 25 still-births, 13 males and 12 females.
DEATHS.
The number of Deaths registered during the year as
belonging to this District was 378 (207 males and 171 females),
as compared with 413 last year.
This number includes those deaths which, although
occurring outside, belonged to this District, but excludes deaths,
occurring inside the District, but belonging to other districts.
The Death Rate for the year was equal to 8.6 per thousand
of population, as against 10.3 last year.
The Death Rate in England and Wales was 12.4 in 1937
and 12.1 in 1936.
The diseases claiming the largest number of deaths were:
Heart disease 101, Cancer 50, and Pneumonia 26.
