(1) A child with multiple disabilities was admitted to a school for the partially
hearing from a day nursery at three years of age. Although this boy was
admitted to the nursery because of his domestic circumstances his period of
attendance there enabled the Assistant County Medical Officer, in co-operation
with the Day Nursery Matron, to make an early and accurate assessment of the
boy's educational needs.
(2) Pour children approaching school age were notified as unsuitable for education
at school. One of them had already been attending a training centre for some
months and in fact final assessment was deferred on the recommendation of the
training centre supervisor. Two of the other children had attended the day
nursery and the matrons were able to make very useful observations on these
children and assist the Medical Officer in making er final as essment.
(3) One child approaching 5 years of age was admitted to the day nursery because
of his domestic circumstances and although he will probably prove to be
unsuitable for education he has been kept on at the day nursery beyond the age
of 5 years because his immaturity prevented an accurate assessment of his
ability being made at the present time. The Borough Education Officer is
willing to co-operate in this scheme.
Several other children who were known to have had emotional, physical or mental
disabilities have, after a period of observation at the day nursery or the child development
session, been admitted to ordinary day schools with every assurance that they will
make satisfactory progress following their period of adjustment at these establishments.
