The average age of the children at the beginning of the year was 9 years l month,
and their average reading age was 7.5 years. At the end of the period the average reading
age was 8.5 years.
Fifty-seven of the children passed out of the primary school at the end of the
summer term. Their average reading age was 9.3 years but it should be noted that this
average has been lowered by two or three boys who have apparently made no progress in
reading in their last year in the group. These are the ones who should have been reported
earlier. Of the fifty-seven moving on, twenty-one had achieved reading ages of over
10 years, and many of the others were not far behind. The way in which the re-adjustment
of these children shows itself most strikingly is, however, in a more attentive attitude
to work and school and in an increase in cheerful self-confidence. When this change takes
place the teachers may justifiably be satisfied with the remedial aspect of their work.
