STAND No.4 FOOT HEALTH
The use of the correct foot wear to obviate foot defects was the main message of this
display which together with charts and plaster casts of feet abnormalities taken by the
staff at the local foot clinics made a worthwhile exhibit. An interesting item kindly loaned
by the Principal of the Cordwainer's College was the display of footwear which was on show
at the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park in 1851.
STAND No. 5 DAY NURSERIES
This exhibit which was backed with an original painting 8' x 4' by a pupil of the
Leyton County High School for Boys displayed in photographs a child's day in the nursery
in which the child was seen in surroundings where his time was fully occupied with sense
training, playing and emotional development. Also displayed were types of play equipment
in use in the nurseries, together with a list of categories on which admission is made.
STAND No.6 SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICE, DENTAL
This exhibit showed the modern dental equipment with which the three clinics in Leyton
have been supplied, and most interesting exhibits showing the development of teeth and jaws
together with sections of teeth in process of dental decay.
STAND No. 7 - SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICE, GENERAL
This exhibit in the form of paper sculpture, showed the many services available to
all school children.
STAND No.8. DOMESTIC HELP SERVICE
This is not an easy subject to portray in an exhibition. However, the difficulty was
surmounted by portraying an average room with a patient in bed and a domestic help in the
room commencing her duties. By ribbons leading from the domestic help's hand to notices
pointing out duties like cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc., were emphasised.
STAND No. 9 VACCINATION & IMMUNISATION
This exhibit, which attracted a great deal of interest owing to its colour and
lighting showed rainclouds marked with the various diseases, with an umbrella - the panels
of which were marked with vaccination and immunisation giving protection to the child
underneath. Charts were also displayed showing the incidence of disease in the Borough
over the past years and how these diseases had been reduced by preventive measures.
STAND No.10 LIBRARY SERVICE
The Leyton Public Libraries were invited to exhibit and they provided a very
colourful stand with the accent on books which were available to readers on health,
physical fitness etc.

The Dawson family theme proved an excellent medium for illustrating the impact of the
County Council's personal health services on the individual. At each stand visitors to the
Exhibition, old and youngs were able to identify themselves with members of the Dawson
family taking advantage of these services. The problem confronting the Chief Public Health
Inspector was how to continue this personal theme in the much broader communal field covered
by the environmental health services provided by the Leyton Borough Council. It was necessary
to introduce the Dawson family to, and associate them with, the statutory duties and respon
sibilities of their Local Council in relation to such broad issues as housing, slum clearance,
