Service exhibits were borrowed and the remainder of them, together with the whole of the
persona] Health Service exhibits, were designed and built by members of the staff of the
Department.
General arrangements for the Exhibition, the publicity., etc.. entailed a considerable
amount of administrative time and inasmuch as the day to day work had to continue it was
only by the public spirited action of the staff in giving up their free time that the project
was carried to such a successful conclusion and at so small a cost.
At the wish of the Sub Committee a brochure was produced and handed to each visitor
to the Exhibition. According to my own observations it was noted that few visitors used the
brochure. However it was a permanent record of the Exhibition for them to take away and
subsequently study.
There was an Official Opening by The Worshipful the Mayor of Leyton (Councillor Mrs.
A.M.M.Burrell) supported by the Chairman of the Committees concerned in the presentation
of the Exhibition, together with the Chairman of the County Health Committee (Alderman
K E B Glenny), and the County Medical Officer of Health. On subsequent evenings there were
displays and demonstrations by the Women's League of Health and Beauty, Leyton Civil Defence,
and the Leyton Branch of the St.John Ambulance Brigade. The official attendance was 5141.
LOCAL HEALTH AUTHORITY EXHIBITS ESSEX COUNTY HEALTH SERVICES
In presenting the Health Exhibition it was considered that there should be some method
of linking together the individual exhibits to give a certain amount of continuity and for
this purpose it was resolved to create a typical family and show how in their normal lives
use both the environmental and personal Health Services. The family were called THE DAWSON
FAMILY and included Mr. & Mrs. Dawson their three children together with Grandma and Grandpa.
On ascending the staircase to the Exhibition the visitors saw a large photograph of the
family group and on every stall there were photographs showing the family using the Services.
This was an original theme in Health Education and raised a great deal of comment from pro
fessional people by its eye-catching qualities.

and other chemical agents, and drew an analogy that is the same way (with welfare foods
nutrients and medicaments) growing children require the right food and is properly cooked
and different types of food for building up and maintaining the health of various parts
of the body.
