measles
1,033 notifications of persons suffering from measles were received in 1957 compared
with 831 in 1956. Fifteen of the patients were removed to hospital. No deaths were recorded
as due to measles.
whooping cough
The number of cases notified was 159 compared to 163 in the previous year. Eighteen
of the cases occurred in infants under one year of age. No deaths were attributable to the
disease. Information regarding protection against whooping cough will be found on page 56.
scarlet fever
The number of cases notified 60 is two more than the cases notified in 1956. The
disease continues to appear in a mild form. In only six cases was it necessary for the
patient to be admitted to hospital.
pneumonia
223 cases of pneumonia were notified during 1957 an increase of 82 on the 1956 noti
fications. This is due, in part to the 'Asian' "flu epidemic which was prevalent in the
latter part of the year.
150 of the notifications were received from one general medical practitioner. It is
likely therefore that the true incidence was many times greater than the number of cases
notified.
