CASES NOTIFIED DURING 1957.
At the foot of this page is a table showing in summary form the relevant information
regarding the cases notified during the year. It will be seen that of the fourteen Leyton
cases thirteen of them occurred during the months of July and August, and seven had some
paralysis.
The notes recorded in the summary under 'Progress' set out the results of a recent
follow-up of the cases and reveals that eight cases have continuing paralysis some eight
months after the disease was diagnosed.
GENERAL
Nine of the fourteen cases notified were under 12 years of age. With the extension
of the scheme for vaccination against poliomyelitis to include all children under 15 years
of age, it is hoped that by the early summer of 1958 a good proportion of this age group
will have had at least an initial immunising dose of vaccine against the disease.

In order to place poliomyelitis in its true perspective it should be noted that no deaths occurred from this disease in Leyton during 1957, whereas nine deaths occurred from 412 road accidents and eleven deaths from an unknown total number of accidents in the home.
