Occupational Therapy.
In March, 1950, it was reported to the Leyton, Wanstead &
Woodford Care Association that certain patients in this area suffering
from tuberculosis would be likely to benefit from a course of occupational
therapy, and the Association decided that the necessary
facilities be provided. A weaving class was commenced and
Mrs. S. A. Wiltshire, a member of the Handloom Centre, was
appointed as instructor. Since that time the Leyton Health Area
Sub-committee has accepted financial responsibility for the
instructor's fees and the cost of a loom.
The following is a report by Mrs. Wiltshire on the activities
of the Weaving Class (October, 1951).
"The first class was held at Leyton Chest Clinic on
26th April, 1950. Two patients attended. The equipment
consisted of one 12-in. table loom and accessories, and at the
end of the day weaving in white and coloured cotton was being
carried out.
Four weeks later the class was transferred to a room at
the Old Relief Station, Dawlish Road, and carried on there
until April 1951. By this time the register had increased to
10 patients and to the equipment had been added an 18-in.
table loom, 18-in. floor loom and a rug frame. Two patients
have now returned to their normal occupations and two to
sanatoria for further treatment. Two patients are engaged on
