Tuberculosis Care Association.
In ray Annual Report for the year 1950 I reported that, at the
request of the County Medical Officer, the duties of Secretary and
Treasurer of the Leyton, Wanstead & Woodford Care Association
had been carried out by Mr. E. E. Jacobs, a member of the staff
of the Health Department.
Owing to illness Mr. Jacobs was absent from duty from early
September, and I arranged for Mr. W. D. Softley of this Department
to carry out the secretarial work involved.
A great deal of useful work has been accomplished by the
Association despite the need for more funds, the main source of
which is from the County Council by way of grants for Care Association
work and the Sunday Entertainment Act, 1932.
Unfortunately the income from the Sunday Entertainment
Act, 1932, ceased on 31st December, 1951. The Executive Committee
of the Association are doing their utmost to replace this
loss by increased voluntary effort. The undermentioned are some
of the activities dealt with by the Association during 1951:—
80 patients received a total of 585 monthly grants.
3 patients were assisted with the supply of beds and bedding.
5 patients received clothing.
2 patients were issued with wireless licences.
37 grants of fares to relatives visiting patients in hospitals and
sanatoria.
A library of popular books, comprising 1,000 volumes, is available
for use by tuberculosis patients through the courtesy
of the Borough Librarian, who provides us with books
which have been withdrawn from public service.
Loans have been made to the Instructor of the Occupational
Therapy Centre to purchase wool, etc. for the use of
patients. These amounts are repaid when the articles
are sold.
