Scarlet Fever is still with us, and there occurred last year
some 166 cases, of whom it was found necessary to remove only
35 to hospital. The mild type of scarlet fever now prevalent has
caused only one death in Leyton in the last ten years. In the
same period at the end of last century the very virulent type of the
disease accounted for some 118 Leyton deaths.

Of the 1,540 cases notified during 1951, some 29 were removed to
hospital; and of these, two children (aged seven months and three
years) died of broncho pneumonia following measles.

Of the 593 children who developed whooping cough during the
year, 12 had to be removed to hospital. For the third year in
succession there was no death due to whooping cough.
