Tuberculosis Care Association.
In my Annual Report for the year 1949 I drew attention to
the County Medical Officer's request, following the resignation of
the then Hon. Secretary and Treasurer of the Leyton, Wanstead
and Woodford Tuberculosis Care Association, that these duties
might be carried out by a member of the County Council's staff
under the provisions of the National Health Service Act (Section 28).
These duties have been carried out by Mr. E. E. Jacobs, a
member of the staff of the Health Department, during the past
year, and a great deal of useful work has been accomplished despite
the need for more funds, the main source of which are received
from the County Council by way of grants for Care Association
work and the Sunday Entertainment Act, 1932.
Occupational Thekapy.
Realising the need for occupational therapy on behalf of certain
patients, in April the Care Association decided to allocate funds
for the purchase of a weaving loom and accessories, and the employment
of an instructor.
As no suitable premises were available at the Chest Clinic,
accommodation has been provided in the premises of the proposed
health centre in Dawlish Road.
Since the 26th April a class averaging 6 patients has met
weekly for instruction by Mrs. L. Wiltshire, instructor from the
hand loom centre. The articles made include such useful things
as scarves, cushion covers, table centres, mats, etc.
Since the class—a new venture in this area—was begun, two
additional looms have been purchased—also a rug frame on which
rugs are now being made.
The under-mentioned are some of the other activities dealt with
by the Care Association during 1950 :—
Provision of Extra Nourishments—125 patients received
a total of 984 monthly grants.
,, „ Clothing, Bedding, etc.—11 cases.
„ „ Fares for Relatives visiting patients in
Hospitals and Sanatoria—68 grants.
,, ,, Wireless Licences—2 (and Receiver in one
instance).
,, ,, Holiday Convalescence—3 cases.
