Miss Bowmer was a State-registered nurse who had been undergoing
her training as a pupil midwife during the past four months.
It is very tragic and shocking that such an accident should
have occurred to two midwives in the exercise of their duties.
The tragic circumstances, under which such a popular and
highly respected public servant met her death, created a profound
impression in the area, especially among mothers who had been
attended by Miss Anderson in her professional capacity.
On Sunday, 13th February, there was held in St. John's
Church, Leytonstone, a memorial service, in which there took
part the Rev. J. A. Stanley, Vicar of St. John's; Canon H. E.
Tilston, Vicar of St. Margaret's; and Miss E. M. Wearn, S.R.N.,
S.C.M., Matron of Essex County Training Home, Beachcroft Road,
E.11. The congregation included His Worship the Mayor and
Mayoress, Aldermen and Councillors of the Borough of Leyton,
Miss Anderson's nursing colleagues in uniform, members of the
staff of the health department, and hundreds of members of the
general public.
The impressive nature of the service, and the fact that the
Church could not accommodate all those who attended, provided
an eloquent testimony to the high regard and esteem in which
Miss Anderson was held.
