Staff.
It is with deep regret that I have to report the following
injuries to two members of the staff of Essex County Nursing Home,
Beachcroft Road, as the result of an accident on 1st February, 1949.
Shortly after 10 p.m. on that date, Miss Alfreda M. Anderson,
a domiciliary midwife, and Miss A. N. Bowmer, a pupil midwife,
were cycling back to Beachcroft Road Nurses' Home after having
attended a domiciliary confinement in Wellesley Road, Leytonstone.
Just after they had passed under the Midland arch a
motor car collided with them. Miss Anderson was killed instantly,
and Miss Bowmer was admitted to Whipps Gross Hospital critically
ill as a result of injuries.
Miss Anderson was a member of the staff of the Essex County
Nurses' Home for 15 years, and since 1937 she had been employed
as a midwife in connection with the Local Health Authority's
arrangements for domiciliary midwifery. Miss Bowmer had been
a pupil midwife at the Home for four months.
I have been associated with Miss Anderson in her work for
over ten years, and I have always regarded her as one of the most
competent and reliable midwives with whom I have been associated.
Possessed of a very pleasing personality, she was popular with her
colleagues, and highly respected by the mothers in the district.
