Investigations have been made and the necessary particulars
furnished wherever possible.
Housing Act, 1936.
Information regarding 867 houses was supplied in connection
with the "permitted number of persons" in dwellings
under the Act.
Local Land Charges.
Particulars with regard to outstanding sanitary notices, not
fully complied with, were given in reference to 1,538 enquiries.
Smoke Abatement.
During the year 121 observations have been made on factory
chimneys. Infringements were found in five instances, and letters
of warning were issued in these cases. It was not found necessary
to institute legal proceedings.
Repairs.
The number of complaints received from occupiers of dwelling
houses regarding defective conditions is still high. Most of the
defects are attributable to the age of the property and the lack of
repairs carried out during the war years. Owing to the acute
shortage of housing accommodation it has not been found practicable
to deal with possible clearance areas and demolitions. Action
taken under the provisions of the Public Health Act, 1936, has
resulted in 2,204 houses being brought up to a reasonable standard
of fitness. Legal proceedings were found necessary in 20 instances,
and the following is the result of such action:—
