tive County, although it was realised that this would probably be
found to be an under¬estimate of requirements.
In the Leyton Area three Helps have been officially appointed
full-time and, of the 29 part-time Helps 17 have indicated their
willingness to work full-time.
For Superannuation purposes Domestic Helps are classed as
"Servants". Full-time Helps enjoy certain privileges to which
part-time Helps are not entitled—Superannuation and Sick Pay
A part-time Help who is giving full time to her duties is therefore
at a disadvantage. On the other hand, it will be appreciated that
the demand for Domestic Helps varies widely from week to week,
and that it is not always easy to arrange for the full-time employment
of Helps. From an administrative point of view it is found
that the employment of part-time Helps is easier and more economic.
When full-time Helps are appointed, they are given to understand
that their services may be required in connection with the work of
Health Centres and Day Nurseries when not required for domestic
help, but my experience has been that such alternative arrangements
are not of much avail in actual practice. It is generally found that
when Health Centres and Day Nurseries are very busy so are
Home Helps.
